Genoa is becoming more and more of a weekend break destination for Londoners looking for a quick taste of authentic Italy. From London you can either fly with Ryan Air from Stansted or British Airways from Gatwick.

The pricing round-up:
Ryan Air Flight : From London to Genoa. Italy – Return. On average it will cost about 50 UKP –

British Airways:From London to Genoa. Italy – Return. On average it will cost about 100 UKP –

However getting to Stansted costs more than getting to Gatwick. No food and no water in flight and no numbered seating.

We recommend that you book your hotel in Genoa a couple of months in advance for the best deals. We found that BA it tends to work out a bit more but for the low extra cost you have a much better experience. Apart from Stansted being harder(and more expensive) to get to, the flight times with BA are much more convenient. Ryan Air flights are less frequent, busier, no seat allocation which means crowded situation and unnecessary pile -ups. With BA you get free drinks and a sandwich included. The biggest advantage is luggage allowance – you don’t get much flying with Ryan Air and it can be a costly extra.

The Romantic Promenade of Nervi

The Romantic Promenade of Nervi

If you planning a romantic weekend on the Italian Riviera flying into Genoa is ideal. Nervi would be a perfect base. It is within easy reach of Genoa by bus(number 17) and train. Nervi is a beautiful small town. It has a nice promenade along the sea and a peaceful park. If its not swimming season and you like to hike it offers easy access to some little known paths that lead to the mountain top. Form there you can see the Ligurian coastal stretch, the apennines and on a clear day the alps too. One tip is to catch the small orange bus that takes you to St Illario – that takes care of half the climb and leaves you more time to enjoy the views from the top.

Nervi Accommodation Tip:

If you looking for budget Bed and breakfast in Nervi : Villa Moderna comes highly reccomended. It is family run and the hotel is a detached villa with its own charming garden. You really get a taste of Italy in there. The owners are very helpful the food they serve is out of this world.

If you want to spend 30 pounds more a night in a good alternative 4 star hotel is Astor Hotel. It is located on Via delle Palme and offers all services you expect from a 4 star hotel.

Wherever you choose to stay, if you plan to eat out ‘La Torchia’ offers a great dining experience. Menu includes a selction of great Italian Seafood as well as pizza (Forno A Legna).

One Response to “Genoa Weekend City Break”

  1. I second the fact that Nervi is lovely! The seaside promenade is gorgeous, and I remember a Christmas Day when the temperature in the sun hit 24°C. Incredible, but true!

And I’m pretty sure you can get to it by train, either from the Piazza Principe or Brignole stations. This might be better if you have a little too much luggage!

Don’t forget boat trips to Porto Fino and the lovely Cinque Terre too!

Talking of boats, there is a boat show in Genoa too, but I’ve never been, so I’m not sure what it is like.

    Best regards from Milan,

    Alex
