With so many small shops and so many beautiful and enticing window displays, it was very difficult not to enjoy this. We never really got to grips with the correct ordering technique but (almost) always got what we wanted.

Via Galata runs alongside the Mercato Orientale and intoVia XX Settembre just above COIN. As well as being where Tipinifini is, it is also the home of lots of small food outlets. The one we ended up using the most was Pasticceria Panarello at Via Galata 67 (tel: 010 561037). This branch of the Panarello chain has a wonderful array of pastries AND a coffee counter inside – the only place nearby where we could eat great pastries (1.40€ each) and drink coffee (1€ per cup) at the same time. And Christina had made friends with Sacco, the shop Labrador.
As far as we could make out, the correct way to order at these places is to tell the lady at the separate till what you would like to eat and/or drink. Pay her and then present the till slip to the person behind the counter for your food. Our problem was that we could never properly describe the pastries we wanted – but people were patient and the results were good.
We also enjoyed eating panini (heated rather than cold) and foccacia on the run. And there appear to be some concessions to healthy living creeping in – Christina had a freshly ground carrot in freshly squeezed orange juice with her mozzarella-prosciutto panini at one of the small cafés on via XX Settembre. She pronounced it to be almost as good as her usual latte macchiato.
Panarello is a chain of pastry shops, not all of which (including one nearby on via XX Settembre) also serve coffee. The via Galata outlet does not have a sitting area – you drink your coffee standing at the counter. Places with tables and chairs charge a bit extra to drink at a table. Pastry shops also offer to wrap pastries (even just two or three of them) to take away. The wrapping is free and beautiful, and the pastries made for a good train snack one day.
Somehow, McDonald’s has managed to open a couple of branches on via XX Settembre. Maybe this is because its food is so cheap – burgers were on promotion for 0.50€. No matter what option you make make sure you try something which is unique to Genoa - La Farinata - This is made from chick pea flower and looks like this:
